muscular headache

I am 57 and over the past few years have experienced what seems to be a reaction to alcohol from time to time. The pain seems to come from the muscle above the ear running to my temple on the left side. My eyeball will even begin to hurt. My blood pressure is generally normal but this causes it to rise sharply. Is that from the pain? I thought at one time it was an allergic reaction affecting my sinuses but after feeling the pain in this muscle group I ruled that out. This does not happen every time I drink but what is causing this and what can I do besides not drink. I enjoy drinking socially.

Hi! I can understand your concerns. The area you talk about is the temporal region of skull and pain in the area can be considered as headache/migraine. Alcohol can cause vasodilatation and this can trigger aches and pain in the scalp and head areas. Alcohol also contains amino acid tryramine which can trigger a migraine attack. Hard and dark colored alcoholic drinks contain Congeners which can also trigger headaches. Also both drinking and giving up alcohol can trigger a spike in blood pressure which can also cause headaches. So its possible that you do not get a headache every time you drink. It all depends on how much you drink and what you drink. Please consult your doctor regarding this. Take care! I sincerely hope you will find this information useful in your journey towards better health. Hope you get well soon! Good Luck and take care!
